1. Dr. Stanley Hordes, formerly the
State Historian of New Mexico, explains how he has researched the history
of the earliest Spanish colonials and hints of their hidden Jewish identity
from present-day descendants.
2. Dr. Rowena Rivera, ethnomusicologist at the
University of New Mexico, has studied the folk songs of New Mexico and compared
them to Sephardic music from that period in Spain, where she has found examples
of Jewish religious themes. Illustrated with a 1942 recording of the New
Mexican folk song "La Zalaga".
3. Raised as Catholics, many people
have found it difficult and frightening to learn that they might be from
a family of hidden Jews. This story, told by a man who wished to remain
anonymous, is one of the most dramatic.
4. Another story was related by a
women who learned that she might be a hidden Jew after inheriting her Grandmothers
diary.
5. Even if they are not directly
tied to a hidden Jewish identity, many writers and scholars have become
interested in this aspect of their New Mexican cultural roots.

6. Ray Padilla, who teaches Chicano culture at
Arizona State University at Tempe also includes the impact of Spanish Jews
in the southwest.
7. Sociologist Tomas Atencio believes
that once they learn about their heritage, many hidden Jews become almost
obsessed with finding this identity.

8. In 1492, Spain expelled the 200,000
Jews who lived there. Five hundred years later, in 1992, the country made
a symbolic gesture by welcoming them back in a special ceremony hosted by
the King of Spain. New Mexican Dennis Duran accepted the invitation.
9. Ramon Salas and Gloria Trujillo traveled to
Spain and Portugal to find traces of their history. In the little southern
Spanish town of Coral de Almaguer, they discover records of an ancestor
who as born there between 1574 and 1580.
10. Ramon and Gloria met with other
hidden Jews from Belmonte, a village in the mountains of Eastern Portugal.
They were shown the old Jewish Quarter by Josef, who pointed out still visible
signs of the Inquisition.
