A GOOD LUCK AMULET
FOR THE SHALTIEL FAMILY
The Hebrew name Shaltiel --
-- is the center. Rising upwards are three half-revealed symbols of the Star of David, decorated with squash blossoms/pomegranates, symbols of fertility. These in turn are surrounded by a band of flowing water, which is rushing down from the mountains above, reaching into the sky.
Above, the sun, moon and stars symbolizing the universe, are held aloft by a rainbow arc, symbol of the covenant. This is spreading a canopy of peace over the earth below, from which springs forth abundant grapevines, heavy with fruit.
At the bottom are symbols of the home, including a Book of Life inscribed with double Chai --
-- in the center, and brightly glowing candles. Together, they remind us that the Shaltiel family has always been associated with being keepers of both knowledge and sacred practice. These are framed by a pattern of door lintels from the Southwest, which is also a symbol of the threshold between the earthly and the divine.
The whole papercut is laid on a background of azure, used
frequently by Moorish craftsmen as a brilliant color for tiles, ceramic and
enamelware, to remind them of water.
